How to Verify Gold Purity
- Check the hallmark stamp: Every gold piece sold in Qatar must bear a karat stamp. Use a magnifying glass to find “916” (22K), “750” (18K), etc. on the inner surface of rings, clasps of chains, or backs of pendants.
- Ask for a certificate: Branded stores (Malabar, Damas) provide purity certificates with every purchase. Souq shops provide receipts stating the karat.
- XRF testing: Advanced shops have handheld X-ray fluorescence machines that instantly test gold purity. Ask if the shop can test your piece — many will do it free.
- Acid test: Traditional purity test where a small scratch is made on a testing stone and exposed to acid. The reaction indicates karat. This is still common at Souq Waqif.
- Magnet test: Gold is not magnetic. If a piece strongly attracts a magnet, it is not real gold. Note: this only catches the worst fakes — gold-plated copper also passes this test.
Qatar’s Consumer Protection for Gold
The Qatar Ministry of Commerce and Industry enforces gold retail standards:
- All gold must be hallmarked with correct karat
- Shops must display the day’s gold rate
- Receipts must itemize weight, karat, making charge, and total price
- Consumers can file complaints at the Ministry for any discrepancy
- Regular inspections of gold shops ensure compliance
Red Flags When Buying Gold
- No hallmark stamp visible on the piece — ask the shop to show you the stamp under a loop
- Price significantly below market rate — if it’s too good to be true, it probably is
- Shop refuses to provide an itemized receipt — walk away
- High-pressure sales tactics — reputable gold shops let you browse freely
- Unusual color or weight for the claimed karat — 22K should have a rich, warm yellow tone
FAQ
Is all gold in Qatar genuine?
Licensed gold shops in Qatar are regulated and inspected. Buying from licensed shops (souq or mall) is safe. Avoid buying gold from unofficial sources, street vendors, or online marketplace sellers.
Can I get my gold tested independently?
Yes. Several shops at Souq Waqif offer independent testing services. You can also visit a different shop than where you purchased and ask them to test purity — most will do it free or for a nominal fee.
