- Consistency with metric system. Qatar and the region use metric for everything else, so gram pricing fits the daily commercial culture.
- Easy mental math. Multiplying a per gram rate by the piece weight is straightforward. Try doing that with troy ounces and most buyers would get lost.
How to Use the Per Gram Rate
The per gram rate is the foundation for calculating the gold value of any piece. Here is the simple math:
Gold value = Per gram rate (for the karat) × Weight of the piece in grams
For example, a 22K bracelet weighing 25 grams at a current 22K rate of QAR 550 per gram has a gold value of QAR 13,750. On top of that the shop adds making charges (labor and design fee), typically 5 to 25 percent.

Every karat has its own per gram rate, derived from the 24K rate using the simple purity ratio:

Yes. Every licensed shop across Qatar uses the same daily per gram rate for each karat. Doha, Lusail, Al Rayyan, Al Wakrah all share identical pricing. The only difference between shops is the making charge added on top.
Why is the 22K per gram price different from the 24K rate?
Because 22K is 91.6 percent pure gold while 24K is 99.9 percent pure. The 22K rate is calculated as 24K rate times 22 divided by 24, which gives a price about 8 percent lower per gram than 24K.
Do shops add charges on top of the per gram price?
